A straight layout wastes about 10% in cuts; a diagonal layout, about 15%. Buy all your tiles from the same batch: shades vary between batches, and a few spare tiles kept back make repairs invisible years later.
Adhesive use depends on the tile size and the notched trowel; larger tiles need a thicker bed. Grout depends on the joint width, the tile thickness and the tile size.

- Tiles = area ÷ area of one tile, plus the waste allowance, rounded up; boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up.
- Adhesive = area × kg per m², in 20 kg bags.
- Grout (kg/m²) = (tile length + tile width) ÷ (tile length × tile width) × joint width × tile thickness × 1.6, all in millimetres.

About 2.8 tiles of 600 × 600 mm, 6.25 of 400 × 400 mm and 11.1 of 300 × 300 mm, before waste.
How much tile adhesive per square metre?
About 4 to 6 kg, so a 20 kg bag fixes roughly 3.5 to 5 m². Large-format tiles may need back-buttering and more.
How much extra should I buy?
About 10% for a straight layout and 15% for diagonal, plus a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs.
